Portland, OR – Authorities have identified the man who was struck and killed by a vehicle in Northeast Portland on Thursday as 49-year-old DaRon V. Craig.
The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. in the 5900 block of NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Investigators say a silver Ford Escape traveling northbound at high speed veered onto the east sidewalk near NE Jarrett Street, striking Craig and another pedestrian.
Craig died at the scene. The second pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition. In an update Friday, police said his injuries remain “extremely serious” but his condition has stabilized.
The driver of the Ford Escape, who has two prosthetic legs, has not yet been publicly identified. He and another driver involved in the crash were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators say there is no evidence to suggest the crash was intentional.
Police initially reported the Ford Escape had been “specially modified” for a handicapped driver but later clarified that, aside from a platform attached to the trailer hitch, no other modifications were present.
No arrests or citations have been issued at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
