Tyrone McCollum, 51, died early Friday morning from injuries sustained in a crash that occurred Thursday night at the intersection of Chicken Road and Evergreen Church Road, according to First Sgt. S.B. Lewis of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
McCollum passed away just after 1 a.m. at UNC Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton.
An investigation revealed that a 2013 Nissan was traveling northbound on Chicken Road while a 2013 Mercedes was heading westbound on Evergreen Church Road. The Nissan failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the Mercedes.
Following the collision, the Nissan veered off the road to the right and came to a stop facing north. The Mercedes also ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch, and came to rest facing west.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to UNC Health Southeastern with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed that McCollum was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Preliminary findings indicate speed and impairment were not factors in the accident.
Charges related to the crash are pending, though specific details have not yet been disclosed.
The Robeson County community mourns the loss of Tyrone McCollum and awaits further updates as the investigation continues.
