It is with profound sadness that the DeKalb County Police Department confirms the death of **Officer David Rose**, who was tragically killed in the line of duty Friday during an active shooter incident near Emory University and the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Officer Rose was remembered for his courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication to protecting the community, even in the face of extreme danger. “Our deepest condolences go out to Officer Rose’s family, friends, fellow DeKalb County officers, and the entire law enforcement community during this most difficult time,” the department said in a statement.
The shooting began late Friday afternoon, prompting Emory University to issue an emergency alert at around 5 p.m. urging students, staff, and nearby residents to RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and avoid the CVS at Emory Point on Clifton Road. For more than an hour, the campus community was told to shelter in place as officers worked to secure the area.
Authorities confirmed that the gunman is dead, and no civilians were injured in the attack.
CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez said the agency was “heartbroken” by the attack, which she disclosed involved the shooter opening fire on at least four CDC buildings. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone at CDC,” Monarez said, adding that the agency is working closely with federal, state, and local partners to investigate the incident.
The CDC campus remains under partial lockdown as the investigation continues.
Officer Rose’s sacrifice comes as the DeKalb County law enforcement community was preparing to welcome **Officer Greeson**, a 12-year veteran of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, to the team. Greeson, who has served as both a School Resource Officer and investigator, lives with his wife Natalie and their three children.
