The body of a 6-year-old boy who fell into the Housatonic River earlier this week has been recovered, authorities confirmed Friday.
Stratford police said the child, identified as Jah, was found about half a mile from where he entered the water near the Birdseye Street boat ramp. Civilian boaters discovered his body floating in the river around 2 p.m. Friday, nearly 48 hours after he went missing.
Jah fell into the river around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday while walking on the boat ramp. A United Illuminating employee jumped in to try to rescue him, but despite immediate search efforts, the boy could not be located.
The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday morning that it was suspending its active search, citing strong currents as a major challenge for crews.
Police have kept the area blocked off as Stratford police, fire, and paramedics remain on scene.
The boy’s body has been transported to the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy will be performed.
