Baton Rouge Police Sergeant Caleb Eisworth Dies Following Targeted Attack

The Baton Rouge community is mourning the loss of Sergeant Caleb Eisworth, a decorated 23-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department, who died Sunday, August 10, 2025, following what authorities have called a “deliberate and cowardly” attack.

Sgt. Eisworth was critically injured on June 16, 2025, when investigators say 41-year-old Gad Black intentionally rammed his pickup truck into Eisworth’s police motorcycle along Joor Road. Authorities report that Black admitted to following Eisworth and expressed a deep hatred for law enforcement.

Black was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, hate crimes, and resisting an officer. His alleged family member, 40-year-old Asia Raby, was charged with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact. Following Eisworth’s death, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed he will seek the death penalty.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas “TJ” Morse expressed profound grief, saying:

“Caleb was an amazing officer and a good man. He spent seven weeks fighting hard to overcome his injuries, but ultimately lost his battle today. I ask that our community continue to lift the Eisworth family and the men and women of our Baton Rouge Police Department up in prayer.”

Mayor-President Sid Edwards ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff until Eisworth’s funeral, honoring his dedication, bravery, and service.

Over his 23 years of service, Sgt. Eisworth received the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest honor, along with multiple awards for heroism. His colleagues and community members remember him as humble, tough, compassionate, and deeply committed to protecting others.

Local and state leaders have shared their condolences:

Gov. Jeff Landry: “Rest in Peace Sergeant Caleb Eisworth. You represent the very best of our state. Please join Sharon and me in praying for the Eisworth family.”
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and our brothers in blue. Rest in Peace, Brother.”
Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, East Baton Rouge Parish: “We mourn the loss of an exemplary public servant and honor the legacy he leaves behind.”
Multiple law enforcement agencies statewide have joined in honoring Eisworth’s sacrifice and offering support to his family.

Sgt. Eisworth’s passing comes on the 20th anniversary of the murder of BRPD Officer Terry Melancon—a sobering reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day.

The Baton Rouge Police Department and the broader Louisiana law enforcement community have pledged to carry forward Sgt. Eisworth’s mission of service. His legacy will be remembered for his courage, dedication, and the countless lives he impacted during more than two decades in uniform.
