Daytona Beach, FL — Authorities have released the identity of the man killed in a fatal collision along State Road 40 in northern Volusia County late Saturday night. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed the victim as 35-year-old Daniel “Dan” Pray II, a well-known tattoo artist from Daytona Beach.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. near Pine Woods Road, an area bordered by dense forest and limited lighting. According to preliminary FHP reports, Pray was traveling eastbound on his motorcycle when an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) heading westbound on the eastbound right grass shoulder unexpectedly veered into his lane. The motorcycle and ATV collided head-on, resulting in severe damage to both vehicles.
Emergency responders from Volusia County Fire Rescue and local EMS arrived on scene within minutes. Despite life-saving efforts, Pray was pronounced dead at the scene. Two individuals who were on the ATV sustained serious injuries and were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for emergency treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly updated.
Investigators are working to determine what led the ATV to enter the motorcycle’s path. Officials have confirmed that State Road 40 was closed in both directions for several hours as traffic homicide investigators documented the crash site, gathered physical evidence, and interviewed witnesses. The FHP has not yet released whether alcohol, speed, or mechanical failure played a role in the incident.

However, the agency reminded the public that ATVs are not designed for highway travel and should not be operated on public roadways, particularly at night. State Road 40, which runs through a mix of rural and residential areas, has been the site of several serious crashes in recent years. Safety advocates continue to urge both motorists and recreational vehicle operators to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and use designated areas for off-road vehicles.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that charges, if any, will be determined upon completion of the case review. The Florida Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or seen the ATV prior to the collision to contact their office. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida.
