Maryland Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash Near Devil’s Backbone Park

A 21-year-old Sharpsburg man has died following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, August 10, on Lappans Road near Devil’s Backbone Park.

Maryland State Police identified the victim as Mason Anthony Figueroa. According to Sgt. David Ward, citing a preliminary crash report, Figueroa was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup eastbound on Lappans Road (Md. 68) when the vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned.

The crash was reported at approximately 6:20 a.m. in the 18800 block of Lappans Road — an area west of Devil’s Backbone Park and east of Sharpsburg Pike (Md. 65). Emergency responders arrived on scene, but Figueroa was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe speed was a factor in the incident. No other vehicles were involved.

The crash remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police.
