Authorities have arrested 19-year-old D’Maury Monteiro of Fall River in connection with Monday’s fatal shooting in Cranston.
According to Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist, Monteiro was taken into custody early Tuesday morning and charged with first-degree murder.
Police responded just before 9:30 a.m. Monday to an apartment complex on Dyer Avenue after reports of an unresponsive person in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found 16-year-old Eduardo Loran Colon of Providence suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Colon was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said the shooting occurred around 3 a.m., but Colon was not discovered until hours later.
Preliminary investigations, supported by surveillance footage, revealed Monteiro, Colon, and a third individual arrived at the complex in a stolen vehicle wearing masks and dark clothing. The group appeared to be attempting a vehicle break-in when Monteiro allegedly drew a handgun and shot Colon multiple times for reasons currently unknown.
Monteiro was later located at an apartment on Fuller Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he had been staying with a female acquaintance. The stolen car was found Monday evening near Aleppo and Bosworth streets in Providence, according to Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez.
Police are executing a search warrant at Monteiro’s Dorchester residence for additional evidence. Monteiro is currently being held as a fugitive in Massachusetts while Rhode Island’s Attorney General’s Office pursues extradition.
Chief Winquist described the incident as “a brazen act of violence that took the life of a young man.” He praised detectives for their swift work in apprehending Monteiro and vowed to continue pursuing justice for all involved. “Our thoughts are with this young man’s family during this tragic time,” Winquist added.
Authorities are seeking information about the incident and the third person involved. Anyone with tips is encouraged to contact Cranston Police at (401) 477-5040 or send an anonymous text to CRANSTONPD at 847411.
