It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of London Powers, a junior majoring in social work, on Monday, August 11, 2025. London was a bright and compassionate student whose presence enriched the University community in countless ways.
A proud native of Washington, D.C., London was deeply committed to her studies and was an esteemed member of the University Honors program. She had ambitious goals to further her education by pursuing a Master of Social Work degree, with a particular focus on adolescent and mental health—a reflection of her genuine passion for helping vulnerable populations.
London’s involvement on campus was extensive and impactful. She was recently elected as the event coordinator for the NCCU Social Work Society for the 2025-26 academic year, a role that allowed her to foster community and support among her peers. Additionally, she was preparing to begin an internship at the Durham Center for Senior Life, exemplifying her dedication to service and outreach.
Those who knew London—professors, classmates, and friends—remember her as a vibrant, hardworking, and supportive individual who invested wholeheartedly in her social work cohort and the university community.
In this difficult time, I encourage all students and employees to seek the support they need. Counseling services are available at 919-530-7646 or by visiting the Student Health Building, second floor, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with drop-in hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For immediate crisis assistance after hours, please call the same number. Faculty and staff can access support through ComPsych via the university’s HR page.
Funeral service details will be shared when available. Please keep London’s family, friends, classmates, and professors in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
