Kanawha County Crash Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Driver

Deputies report that a crash on Interstate 79 last week claimed the life of 19-year-old Devan Lawson of Gallipolis, Ohio, in what investigators believe was a drowsy-driving accident.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Lawson was driving northbound near Elkview on Aug. 4 when his vehicle left the roadway, entered the median, and rolled multiple times. Lawson was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck, sustaining fatal injuries.

Investigators said crash reconstruction specialists found no evidence of impairment or excessive speed. Officials believe Lawson may have fallen asleep while driving.

The original crash occurred just before 5:30 a.m., near mile marker 7, closing the fast lanes in both directions. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are urging drivers to remain alert, avoid drowsy driving, and always wear seatbelts to prevent similar tragedies. The investigation remains ongoing.
