Lincoln County Seeks Justice After Autopsy Reveals Details of Candice Aufrecht’s Tragic Death

New details have emerged regarding the death of Candice Aufrecht, 41, whose remains were discovered in February near Dallas, North Carolina. Aufrecht had been reported missing in March 2023, sparking a lengthy investigation that has now led to the arrest of a suspect.

Investigators found Aufrecht’s remains inside a large toolbox, wrapped in a blue tarp, approximately 37 feet from US 351N. The autopsy revealed she died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Identification was confirmed through dental records and personal belongings.

Zachary William Ramey, 35, of Blairsville, Georgia, has been arrested in connection with Aufrecht’s death. He faces charges of murder in Lincoln County and concealment of death in Gaston County and is currently held without bond in Gaston County Jail. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

William Aufrecht, Candice’s husband, spoke to WCNC Charlotte after her identification, describing the devastating impact her disappearance had on his life. “It affects everything … your job, your sleep, your everything. You can’t think,” he said.

The couple first met in high school and reconnected years later in April 2015, marrying two years after. William fondly remembered Candice as a vibrant, kind-hearted woman who “smiled all the time” and “never met a stranger.”

Though separated at the time of her disappearance, William never stopped searching for Candice. He frequently traveled from Charleston to Lincoln County, passing out flyers and visiting local areas in hopes of finding her.

The Lincoln County community remains shocked by this tragic loss, and authorities continue to seek justice for Candice Aufrecht. WCNC Charlotte encourages anyone impacted by this case to share memories, photos, and stories through its More Than A Number initiative, honoring her life and legacy.
