Man Killed, Woman Injured in Downtown Birmingham Shooting; Suspect Arrested

Formal charges have been filed against Terrance Akeem Alexander, 37, of Pinson, in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred downtown Birmingham on Friday evening. Alexander faces a murder charge in the slaying of 31-year-old Taevon Jamir Arnold. He is also charged with first-degree assault and two counts of discharging a firearm into a building or vehicle, according to court records made public Tuesday night.

Alexander was taken into custody less than 24 hours after the shooting and was booked into Jefferson County Jail Monday morning. He posted bonds totaling $120,000 and was released Tuesday morning.

The shooting unfolded just before 6 p.m. on Friday and was captured by surveillance cameras. Video footage shows a group of about eight men gathered on the sidewalk on 14th Street North between First and Second avenues. An interaction appeared to escalate as the suspect stepped into the street, firing shots. The victim, Arnold, also brandished a gun, though it is unclear if he fired before being shot.

Police recovered at least 18 shell casings near the scene. Both Arnold and a woman were rushed to the hospital, where Arnold was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m.

North Precinct officers responded to multiple calls reporting gunfire near First Avenue North and 14th Street at approximately 5:50 p.m. They found the injured victims near a Marathon gas station. Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from the interaction between the suspect and victims.

Authorities clarified there was no direct connection between the shooting and the nearby Church of the Reconciler, although the church has been associated with community outreach in the area. The shooting location was closer to First Avenue North than the church itself.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald noted ongoing efforts by the police command staff to address increasing complaints of criminal activity in the vicinity, including deployments of additional resources.

Alexander was arrested by the Department’s Crime Reduction Team at around 9 a.m. on Saturday. His criminal history includes guilty pleas to possession of controlled substances—charges related to trafficking morphine—resulting in a 60-month sentence with 18 months served. He also has previous convictions for burglary and robbery.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
