Authorities confirm that 28-year-old Timothy Kappenhagen has died following a shooting incident that occurred Saturday while he was placing groceries into his car.
According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, Kappenhagen succumbed to his injuries just before 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Maple Heights Police reported that officers responded to the 5300 block of Warrensville Center Road around 1:40 p.m., where Kappenhagen was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Investigators say he had been shopping at Giant Eagle and was loading groceries into his vehicle when the suspect approached, leading to a struggle during which Kappenhagen was shot.
The suspect then fled in Kappenhagen’s vehicle, which was recovered shortly afterward. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with information to contact the Maple Heights Detective Bureau at (216) 587-9624.
Giant Eagle released a statement expressing sympathy, saying, “Our thoughts are with the victim of today’s violent act that occurred in the parking lot of the Southgate Giant Eagle. We are collaborating closely with law enforcement to aid in its investigation.”
Kappenhagen’s unexpected death has left friends and family mourning the tragic loss of a young life taken too soon.
