Authorities have identified the victims of a brutal double homicide in Melbourne’s southeastern suburb of Mount Waverley as 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos and 50-year-old Andrew Gunn. The couple, who had been together for three years and were expecting a child, were found dead inside their home on Monday evening. Georgopoulos was reportedly five months pregnant.
Police arrested a 34-year-old homeless man at Westall train station early Tuesday morning. He has been charged with two counts of murder and is set to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Details emerging from the scene paint a disturbing picture. 7NEWS reported that Gunn had been decapitated, with his head allegedly found on a stick. The nature of Georgopoulos’ injuries has not yet been disclosed. Authorities also discovered cryptic graffiti on the property and a fence nearby, bearing phrases such as “enough is enough,” “karma has no menu,” and “meat is murder,” with investigators probing whether the messages are linked to the killings.
Georgopoulos’ mother, visibly distraught, visited the crime scene on Tuesday and expressed deep anguish over her daughter’s death and pregnancy.
Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the attack appeared to be targeted, noting that there is believed to be a connection between the suspect and the residence. “The suspect arrived at the location, and it is evident that an altercation ensued, resulting in the deaths of the male and female, after which the suspect departed the scene,” he stated.
The investigation remains ongoing.
