Southbound traffic on Interstate 275 near the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge came to a grinding halt today after two unrelated but serious accidents occurred within miles of each other.

The incidents created a massive traffic backup, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded for hours in sweltering afternoon heat. The first crash, reported shortly before noon, involved a vehicle fire. Witnesses say flames engulfed the car on the shoulder of the roadway, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air.

Fire crews quickly arrived and worked to douse the blaze while ensuring no other vehicles were threatened. Fortunately, early reports indicate that the driver was able to escape the burning car without life-threatening injuries, though they were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Just minutes later—and in nearly the same stretch of southbound lanes—emergency dispatchers received word of another, far more serious accident. According to initial reports, a vehicle veered off the road and plunged over the side barrier into the waters below.

The incident prompted an immediate multi-agency response, including Florida Highway Patrol, local sheriff’s deputies, fire rescue units, and marine search-and-rescue teams. Boats and divers were deployed as first responders attempted to locate the submerged vehicle and assist anyone inside.

The combination of the two incidents forced authorities to close multiple lanes, effectively bottling all southbound traffic just north of the bridge. By early afternoon, some drivers reported being stranded in place for more than two hours.
