Tragic Discovery: 76-Year-Old Swimmer Barratt A Gorman Dies in Lake Ontario

The Oswego community is mourning the loss of Barratt A. Gorman, 76, who was found deceased in Lake Ontario on Tuesday night, August 12, 2025.

According to the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the shoreline west of the SUNY Oswego Campus off Route 89 at approximately 9:31 p.m. after receiving a report of a man in the water. At around 10:20 p.m., Gorman was located and sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities shared that Gorman was a familiar figure in the area, known for regularly swimming in that part of Lake Ontario. He lived nearby on Route 89, making the lake a natural part of his daily life and routine.

Gorman retired in 2004 after a long career with the New York Power Authority, as confirmed by online state pension records. His passing marks a deep loss for those who knew him as a neighbor, friend, and community member.

Details regarding memorial arrangements have not yet been announced.
