Authorities have identified David Sanchez, 18, a Central High School graduate and standout wrestler, as the victim of an apparent drowning at Lake Pueblo on Aug. 12.
Sanchez, who finished his high school wrestling career with 125 wins, three state qualifications, and two state runner-up titles, was set to continue both his academic and athletic journey with the Otero College wrestling team in La Junta.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), rangers were alerted just before noon to a possible drowning near the dam at the east end of the lake. Witnesses said a man without a life jacket went under in 23 feet of water, about 65 yards from shore. A CPW boat crew, working with a Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office diver, recovered Sanchez and performed CPR while racing to shore, but medics pronounced him dead shortly before 1 p.m.
If confirmed, Sanchez will be the fifth drowning victim at Lake Pueblo this year.
The Pueblo Central Wrestling team honored Sanchez in a heartfelt Facebook post, calling him “a brother to all the wrestlers” and praising his fighting spirit on the mat:
“When others counted you out, you showed them why they shouldn’t. From your signature high flyer to your in-the-air double leg, you always finished a match with excitement.”
CPW Park Manager Joe Stadterman expressed condolences to Sanchez’s family, friends, and everyone affected by the tragedy, noting the swift response of park staff and rescue crews.
Sanchez’s former coaches and teammates say his memory will live on — not just for his athletic achievements, but for the loyalty, joy, and camaraderie he brought to those around him.
