Commuters heading citybound on Plenty Road faced delays this morning after a traffic collision forced the closure of two left lanes just before Kingsbury Drive.

The incident occurred during the busy inbound rush, prompting emergency services to attend the scene and manage traffic flow while clearing the roadway. According to Victoria Police, the crash was reported shortly after 8:00 a.m., involving at least two vehicles in the inbound lanes.

Early indications suggest that one of the vehicles may have attempted to change lanes before colliding with another car, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Paramedics from Ambulance Victoria attended, and it is understood that at least one person was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The two left-hand lanes were immediately closed to allow emergency crews and tow trucks to operate safely. Traffic controllers were deployed to guide vehicles past the incident, with the two right-hand lanes remaining open to keep citybound traffic moving. Despite these measures, significant delays quickly built up along Plenty Road, with congestion stretching back several kilometres toward Bundoora.

Motorists reported travel times increasing by 15–25 minutes during the morning peak, and VicRoads issued an advisory urging drivers to allow extra time for their journeys or consider alternative routes. Those familiar with the area were advised to detour via Settlement Road or Grimshaw Street to bypass the congestion.

Local residents noted that Plenty Road is one of the primary arterial routes into Melbourne’s CBD from the northern suburbs, and even minor incidents can cause substantial ripple effects for traffic flow.

“If there’s a crash anywhere along this stretch during peak hour, you can feel it all the way back to South Morang,” said commuter James Fletcher, who experienced the delays firsthand.

Tow trucks arrived at the scene shortly before 9:00 a.m., and damaged vehicles were removed to the roadside for further inspection. Road crews then began clearing debris and checking for any hazards before fully reopening all lanes. By around 9:30 a.m., traffic began to ease, though residual delays persisted well into the mid-morning.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers or report directly to the local police station. The investigation will determine whether factors such as speeding, distraction, or failure to give way contributed to the crash.

Authorities have also taken the opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of maintaining safe following distances and staying alert in high-traffic areas, especially during peak commuting periods.

With all lanes now reopened, VicRoads says traffic has returned to normal, but they continue to monitor Plenty Road for any flow-on congestion.
