Search and rescue teams have recovered a body believed to be that of 23-year-old Blake Kieckhafer of Omaha, Nebraska, following an extensive multi-day search in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.
Park officials said Kieckhafer was reported missing to rangers on Monday, August 11. He was last seen on Thursday, August 7, at approximately 5:20 p.m., when a rideshare service in the Upper Beaver Meadows area of the park dropped him off.
On Wednesday, August 13, search efforts were concentrated near Emerald Lake after investigators identified the area as a likely search zone. More than 80 personnel participated in the operation, which involved Rocky Mountain National Park rangers, Larimer County Search and Rescue Dog Teams, Arapaho Rescue Patrol, and a contracted helicopter from Trans Aero.
The body was recovered above Emerald Lake and airlifted by helicopter to a designated landing zone within the park before being transferred to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office. The coroner will confirm the victim’s identity and determine the official statement. GoFundMe.
Kieckhafer’s family released a statement expressing their grief, remembering Blake as “full of life, laughter, and love—someone who was always joking around.” They described his loss as devastating and said they are now faced with the painful task of bringing him home to Nebraska to be laid to rest.
“Blake was the youngest of us four kids,” the statement read. “Our family is shattered by his loss. Please be respectful with your comments—friends and family may be reading.”
