Father Calls for Safety Improvements After Daughter’s Fatal Motorcycle Crash in La Jolla

A grieving father is urging city officials to implement additional safety measures on Torrey Pines Road after his 20-year-old daughter, Viviana Rose, died in a motorcycle crash early last week.

Viviana, who purchased her motorcycle in April, was returning home around 3 a.m. last Friday after a morning trip to the ocean when police say she crashed into the center median near Roseland Drive. Despite wearing a helmet, she was ejected from the bike and later died at a local hospital.

Her father, Ruben Holguin, described his daughter as “a light” — outgoing, joyful, and creative. She had been building a 3-year-old nail art business on TikTok and was passionate about her craft. “She was flourishing,” Holguin said.

Holguin believes the median where the crash occurred is difficult to see, particularly when coming down the hill. He was told by officers at the scene that there was no signage marking the median. Historical Google Earth images show inconsistent signage over the last decade, with the most recent image from February showing no sign at all. The area also bears visible damage from past collisions.

“That shows it was waiting to take someone else’s life,” Holguin said. “It needed to be properly signed, with reflectivity, or someone else is going to lose their child or loved one.”

A spokesperson for the City of San Diego said: “This incident is currently under review and the City is still gathering information. The Transportation Department evaluates all fatal traffic collisions that occur within the City, including whether any potential traffic and safety improvements are needed.”
