Third Fatal Crash in Two Months at Lee County Intersection Claims Life of North Aurora Motorcyclist

A suburban man has died following a motorcycle crash in rural Lee County over the weekend, marking the third fatal accident at a dangerous intersection in just two months.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, 67-year-old Alan P. Klimas, of North Aurora, Ill., was killed on Saturday, August 9, after crashing his 2022 Harley Davidson at the intersection of Illinois Route 251 and Chicago Road.

Authorities said Klimas was riding with a group around 7 p.m. when they realized too late they needed to make a left turn onto Chicago Road. The pavement was slick from a recent thunderstorm, causing Klimas to slide and lose control.

He sustained severe injuries and was transported to OSF St. Paul Medical Center in Mendota, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that the intersection has been the site of multiple serious accidents recently. On June 9, a crash there claimed the lives of 16-year-old Chasity J. Stavenhagen, of Earlville, and 20-year-old Kevin Kain, of West Brooklyn. On July 3, another collision severely injured a 42-year-old Sycamore man, who was airlifted to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford for treatment.

Officials say the series of tragic incidents underscores the dangers of the intersection, which continues to be a concern for local law enforcement and residents.
