The entire Maui community grieves with heavy hearts as the Maui Police Department announces the tragic loss of Officer Suzanne O, who was killed in the line of duty on Friday, August 15, 2025.
At approximately 8:26 p.m., officers responded to an in-progress terroristic threatening incident at the Paia Sugar Mill off Baldwin Avenue. During the encounter, Officer O sustained fatal injuries. The suspect involved remains in custody as the investigation continues.
A Dedicated Life of Service
Officer O joined the Maui Police Department in 2020, first serving in the Kihei Patrol District before transferring to the Wailuku Patrol District in December 2021. She was a proud member of the MPD Honor Guard and often volunteered during high-demand periods, stepping in to handle Alternative Calls for Service, even on her days off. She also regularly supported the Dispatch team outside of her scheduled duties.
Her service and selflessness did not go unnoticed. Community members frequently commended her professionalism, kindness, and tact. In recognition of her brave efforts during the August 8th wildfires, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit. Colleagues describe her as compassionate, genuine, and unwavering in her dedication to Maui County. Beyond the badge, she cherished time with her niece and nephews, always putting family first.
A Legacy That Will Live On
The Maui Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Officer O’s family, friends, and colleagues. Funeral and memorial service arrangements will be announced once finalized.
Officer O served with courage, honor, and devotion. Her sacrifice will never be forgotten. As the MPD ‘ohana mourns alongside her loved ones, we ask the community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Together, we will honor her legacy by continuing the values she embodied—service, compassion, and commitment to protecting Maui.
