Authorities say a Kansas City mother of five, who was pregnant, was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend in a violent attack earlier this month.

Braisen Cain, 42, was allegedly killed on August 6 in the front yard of her home by Arel Dawkins, with whom she was expecting a child, according to a probable cause statement.

Investigators say Dawkins ran Cain over with his Ford F-150 before exiting the truck and shooting her multiple times at close range. Surveillance video reportedly captured the entire attack. At one point, Dawkins allegedly reloaded his weapon and returned to fire additional shots before fleeing the scene in his truck.

Authorities allege Dawkins later confessed to family members during phone calls and threatened to end his own life. He was arrested days later in Springfield, Missouri, without incident. Dawkins is being held without bond in the Greene County Jail.

Cain was a teacher at the Academy for Integrated Arts in Kansas City. Friends and family describe her as a loving, kind, and caring person devoted to her children. She leaves behind five children, ranging in age from 2 to 19. A GoFundMe has been launched to support them and assist with funeral costs.

The community is mourning the devastating loss of Cain, whose life was taken in such a shocking act of violence. The investigation remains ongoing.
