Nine South Carolina teenagers have been arrested in connection with the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, a tragedy that authorities say stemmed from an argument “over a girl.”
Florence County Sheriff’s deputies discovered Wright fatally shot on First Neck Road, about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. Investigators later arrested Devan Scott Raper, 19, of Conway, who allegedly shot Wright after an argument. Authorities say at least one teen present recorded the killing on video.
As the investigation expanded, deputies announced additional arrests. Among those charged is Wright’s 17-year-old girlfriend, Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, accused of being an accessory before the fact for allegedly bringing Raper to the scene, knowing he was armed and intended to harm Wright.
Prosecutors say the group of teens conspired to lure Wright to the location, fully aware Raper had threatened him with a gun. Under South Carolina law, all five initially arrested are being charged as adults. More recently, three additional Myrtle Beach-area teens—Hunter Kendall (18), Corrine Belviso (18), and Sydney Kearns (17)—were charged with murder.
Raper remains jailed without bond on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Kendall is also being held without bond, while Belviso and Kearns have been released on $20,000 bonds each, pending trial.
“This all started over a female,” Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life and a 19-year-old who will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. Over what?”
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, continues to mourn her son. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby,” she said.
The case remains under investigation.
