Authorities have released new details surrounding Friday’s fatal shooting on Route 302 in Windham that left one man dead and prompted a shelter-in-place order into the evening.
Maine State Police confirmed that the suspected shooter, James Ford, 48, of Windham, was later found dead, though officials have not released his cause of death. Investigators say there is no known connection between Ford and the victim, describing the incident as a seemingly random act of violence.
The victim has been identified as Erin Hayne, 33, of Casco. According to state police, the shooting occurred around 1:55 p.m. near the intersection of Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) and Landing Road. Witnesses reported that Hayne, who was riding a motorcycle at the time, was shot in the roadway.
The attack triggered a heavy police response and a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area as officers searched for the gunman. By Friday evening, Ford was located deceased, bringing an end to the immediate threat.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine Ford’s motive and reconstruct the moments leading up to the shooting. Authorities emphasized that, at this stage, there appears to be no prior relationship between the suspect and the victim.
Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to contact Maine State Police.
