A tragic accident claimed the life of a young child Saturday afternoon after a vehicle struck a home on Keyser Lake Road in the Town of Oppenheim.

New York State Police in Fonda reported that the incident occurred around 4:36 p.m., when a vehicle lost control while backing down a driveway and crashed into the side of the residence. Investigators said the child, who was standing outside near the home, suffered fatal injuries.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the child could not be saved. Out of respect for the family, authorities have not released the victim’s name or age.

The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been cooperative with law enforcement. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The devastating loss has left the Oppenheim community in mourning. Local officials are reminding residents to use extreme caution when operating vehicles near homes and areas where children may be present.
