Matthew McLaughlin Obituary Death; Two arrested after human remains of veteran found

Matthew McLaughlin Obituary Death;- Two men arrested for military desertion are being charged with the murder of their roommate in northern New Mexico.

Rainor Joiner, 23, and 22-year-old David Degroat, both of Georgia, are charged with first-degree murder and other related felonies. The Taos County Sheriff’s Office made the initial arrests, which led to Joiner admitting to the shooting and dismembering the victim with the help of Degroat.

Law enforcement was following up on the missing person’s case of 25-year-old Matthew McLaughlin, of Tres Piedras. The two roommates were detained for questioning during the response. The apparent confession led deputies to find several plastic bags along U.S. 64, near Tres Piedras. Those bags did contain human remains, identified as McLaughlin.

The human remains were turned over to the state Office of the Medical Investigator. McLaughlin was reported missing to TCSO on July 31. It was found the three served together at Fort Benning in Georgia. This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available
