Long Island Man Dies After Falling From Paddleboard at Walton Lake

A 36-year-old Long Island man drowned after falling from a paddleboard at Walton Lake in Orange County on Saturday, August 16, New York State Police reported.

Authorities identified the victim as Mohammadsadegh Kiani of Plainview, who had traveled to the Town of Monroe to spend the day with friends. Around 3:50 p.m., Kiani was sitting alone on a yellow inflatable paddleboard about 40 feet from shore in water six to seven feet deep when he lost his balance and fell, troopers said. He began struggling in the water and did not resurface.

Several patrons from the nearby American Legion Post rushed to help and pulled Kiani from the water, immediately beginning life-saving efforts. EMS and state police arrived shortly after, and Kiani was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in critical condition. Despite extensive resuscitation, he was pronounced dead.

State police determined the drowning to be accidental, and no foul play is suspected. Investigators were assisted at the scene by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Chester Police Department.

Officials remind the public to exercise caution during water activities and to follow safety guidelines when using paddleboards and other watercraft.
