The Belleville community is mourning the tragic death of 33-year-old Emily Johnson of Mascoutah, who was fatally struck in a hit-and-run early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on Green Mount Road near Eckert’s, and Johnson was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon at 4:35 a.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Authorities report that the driver fled the scene before first responders arrived. The Belleville Police Department is actively investigating the incident and urges anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward by calling 618-234-1212 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
