Troy Brent Thomas, 62, of Onida, SD, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to family, ranching, and the cattle industry.

Born December 13, 1962, in Brookings, SD, to Harry and Kay (Ludwig) Thomas, Troy was baptized and an active member of the Presbyterian Church. He grew up on the Thomas Ranch in Sully County, where he developed a lifelong passion for cattle, the outdoors, and hands-on work alongside his father. Troy’s love for showing cattle led him to countless competitions, including wins at the American Royal in Kansas City and Ak-Sar-Ben, creating cherished memories with his family.

After graduating from Sully Buttes High School in 1981, Troy attended South Dakota State University, where he had opportunities to pursue veterinary school but chose to return home to continue the ranching legacy. In 1985, he married VeaBea Bourk, and together they celebrated 40 years of marriage. They raised two daughters, Taylor and Cally, and cherished his role as Papa Troy to his grandchildren Tee and Tyler.

Troy also spent time in Cimarron, Kansas, leading the Dewey Charolais program before returning to the Thomas Ranch in 1994. Throughout his life, he was deeply involved in the cattle industry, earning recognition as Charolais Herdsman of the Year and judging prestigious shows across North America. He also served on numerous boards, including the American International Charolais Association and the South Dakota Angus Association.

Beyond his professional achievements, Troy was a mentor and friend to many, offering guidance, encouragement, and support to the next generation of ranchers and cattle enthusiasts. His impact extended far beyond the ranch, touching the lives of all who knew him.

Visitation will be held from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the Sully Buttes School Gymnasium, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the Sully Buttes School Gymnasium, with interment at Onida Cemetery.

Troy is survived by his wife, VeaBea; daughter Cally (Clint) Kindred and grandchildren Tee and Tyler; parents Harry and Kay Thomas; sister Tracy (Pat); and extended family and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter Taylor and numerous family members.

Troy B. Thomas will be remembered not only for his accomplishments in the cattle industry but for his unwavering character, generosity, and love for family and community. His legacy will endure in the lives he touched and the ranching heritage he helped build.
