Authorities have identified the suspect in Friday morning’s deadly shooting at Ingalls Shipbuilding as Curtis James of Mobile, Alabama.
According to the Pascagoula Police Department, officers were dispatched to the shipyard around 7:32 a.m. on August 22, 2025, after reports of an active shooter. Upon arrival, they found a victim, described as a painter employed at the facility, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Ingalls Shipbuilding confirmed the incident in a statement urging employees to shelter in place while law enforcement secured the area. By mid-morning, police announced that James had been taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators later revealed that the shooting was tied to a domestic-related incident. Earlier that morning, James’ wife was found dead at a residence, with evidence suggesting she had been killed the previous night. Authorities believe James then targeted the Ingalls employee, who was allegedly involved in a relationship with his wife.
The names of the deceased victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Police stressed that the violence was an isolated incident and that there is no continuing threat to the community.
HII, the parent company of Ingalls Shipbuilding, released a statement offering condolences and reaffirming its commitment to worker safety, noting that the company is cooperating fully with investigators.
Ingalls Shipbuilding is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a critical builder of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels.
The investigation into both the homicide and the shipyard shooting is ongoing.
