Victim Killed in Ingalls Shipbuilding Shooting Identified as Tahj Johnson

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the victim in Friday morning’s fatal workplace shooting at Ingalls Shipbuilding as Tahj Johnson, an employee of the Pascagoula shipyard.

Police Chief Terry Scott said the shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. on August 22, 2025, aboard a vessel under construction. The incident led to an immediate lockdown of the shipyard as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

The suspected gunman, 25-year-old Curtis James Jr. of Mobile, Alabama, was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Police confirmed that both Johnson and James were employees at Ingalls. Investigators believe the violence may have stemmed from an argument between the two earlier in the week.

No additional injuries were reported, though the firearm used has not been recovered. Ingalls Shipbuilding declared an “active shooter” situation and instructed all personnel to shelter in place until the area was secured. Employees were later released with pay, and grief counseling services are being provided.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
