Authorities Release Details After Deadly Waffle House Shooting; One Suspect Arrested, Another at Large

Authorities in Richmond County have released new information following a deadly shooting at a local Waffle House, including the identification of the victim and the arrest of one suspect, while another remains at large.

The incident occurred Wednesday, August 20, at the Waffle House on Talbot Drive near Tobacco Road. Deputies responded to reports of gunfire and discovered that 23-year-old Antoine Stokes of Martinez had been shot. Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed Stokes suffered at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon just before 4 p.m. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators identified two suspects connected to the shooting. On Thursday, 23-year-old Layla Bennett was arrested and now faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Her exact role remains under investigation.

Authorities are actively searching for 26-year-old Jalen Thomas, who is wanted on a murder charge. Thomas is considered armed and dangerous, and officials urge the public not to approach him. He is known to frequent the Tobacco Road area and Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway.

Law enforcement continues to work with the community for leads. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Courtland Harris at 706-821-1455, or the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1020 or 706-821-1080. Tips can be submitted confidentially.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding Stokes’ death. Family and friends mourn the loss of the 23-year-old, while deputies continue their search for Thomas and prosecutors move forward with charges against Bennett.
