Authorities have released the names of five people who were killed in a tragic tour bus rollover on Interstate 90 in Pembroke.
The New York State Police reported that a 2005 Van Wool Bus and Coach, operated by M&Y Tour Inc. of Staten Island, was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls to New York City when it veered off the roadway into the median. The bus then abruptly corrected, overturning and rolling off the south embankment of I-90.
The crash caused multiple passengers to be ejected or trapped, resulting in five confirmed deaths at the scene. The bus was carrying a total of 54 occupants.
The deceased have been identified as:
Shankar Kumar Jha, 65, of Madhu Bani, India
Pinki Changrani, 60, of East Brunswick, N.J.
Xie Hongzhuo, 22, Columbia University student from Beijing, China
Zhang Xiaolan, 55, of Jersey City, N.J.
Jian Mingli, 56, of Jersey City, N.J.
Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the bus operator showed no signs of impairment, and no mechanical failure was detected.
The investigation into the rollover is ongoing, with officials continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
