Darlington County mourns the tragic loss of Charles Wayne Polson Jr., who was fatally struck while riding his bicycle Friday morning near East McIver Road and South Charleston Road. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Polson Jr. was traveling westbound around 11:15 a.m. when a vehicle also traveling west struck him. The driver fled the scene, leaving Polson Jr. to succumb to his injuries at the site of the crash.
Bicyclists like Charles are protected under law, yet accidents—especially hit-and-runs—can result in devastating consequences. Authorities emphasize that drivers involved in collisions have a legal obligation to remain at the scene and ensure injured parties receive medical assistance. Fleeing the scene, as in this case, compounds the tragedy and exposes drivers to serious legal repercussions.
Candice Bond, a hit-and-run accident attorney, highlighted the importance of a swift, independent investigation in cases like this. “Early intervention is crucial to preserve evidence and establish negligence,” Bond said. “Lawyers can help gather key evidence, interview expert witnesses, and ensure insurance coverage and accountability are properly addressed.”
Wrongful Death Considerations
The family of Charles Wayne Polson Jr. may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, added, “Families coping with sudden loss can be overwhelmed by legal processes. Having an experienced attorney ensures their rights are protected and provides compassionate guidance during this difficult time.”
Charles Wayne Polson Jr.’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers cyclists face on the road, and his memory lives on in the hearts of family, friends, and the Darlington County community.
