A disturbing discovery has prompted a death investigation after a decomposed, decapitated body was found behind a McDonald’s restaurant in Nashville Friday morning.

Metro Nashville police said officers were called around 10 a.m. to the wooded area behind the McDonald’s located at 3300 Dickerson Pike. A woman had come across what appeared to be “severely decomposed skeletal remains” and alerted authorities.

As homicide detectives searched the area, they located a human skull in a deep state of decomposition near the parking lot, not far from where the rest of the remains were found.

Police have not yet released the identity of the individual or a cause of death. The Metro Nashville Police Department said the investigation is active and ongoing as forensic experts work to piece together how the person died and how the remains ended up at the location.

Officials urge anyone with information to contact police as they continue to investigate the grim discovery.
