A tragic shooting in Hartford, Vermont, has claimed the life of 65-year-old David Labrecque of Canaan, New Hampshire, during what authorities describe as an attempted robbery on Thursday evening.
According to Vermont State Police, Labrecque was inside a residence when suspects forced their way in. During the incident, he was fatally shot, and a 36-year-old woman inside the home was also struck multiple times. She survived the attack and is receiving treatment for serious injuries at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Investigators identified 30-year-old Demetrius Drew of New Haven, Connecticut, as the suspected gunman. Drew, who police say entered the home intending to steal drugs, has been charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.
Police also arrested Jeffery and Michelle Mullins of Rindge, New Hampshire, alleging they acted as accessories before the fact in the crime. Authorities believe the Mullins couple played a supporting role in planning or facilitating the attempted robbery.
The case remains under investigation as prosecutors work to determine the full scope of involvement of each suspect.
Labrecque’s death has deeply shaken both Vermont and New Hampshire communities. Family and friends remember him as an innocent victim whose life was senselessly cut short in a violent act that has left lasting grief.
Authorities say further updates will be released as the investigation continues.
