NY Native, Army Veteran Ishmoile Mohammed Remembered After Fire Island Drowning

FIRE ISLAND, NY — The Long Island community is mourning the loss of Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, a proud New York native and decorated Army veteran, who died after being pulled from a rip current at Sailors Haven on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Suffolk County Police said Mohammed was rescued from the water and airlifted to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Born and raised in Wyandanch, Mohammed attended Wyandanch Memorial High School and carried his hometown pride with him throughout his life. Friends remembered him online as a man who never forgot his roots, even as his service took him far beyond Long Island.

Mohammed went on to serve more than 20 years in uniform with the U.S. Army and New York Army National Guard, ultimately rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. A combat veteran, he fought in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm with an armored cavalry regiment.

Following active combat service, Mohammed became a recruiter and later a Section Chief with the New York Army National Guard, serving in both New York City and Rochester. His dedication earned him numerous awards and commendations, reflecting his leadership and commitment to his fellow soldiers.

After retiring, Mohammed continued supporting service members and their families as a Family Assistant Specialist with Skyline for nearly eight years. In 2019, he also completed a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and Law Enforcement at Thomas Edison State University.

“He was a patriotic American who served his country with honor and distinction,” said Sergeant Major Eric R. Hunt, U.S. Army (Retired), who served alongside him. “He was a kind man with a gentle soul. He always greeted you with a smile and a hug.”

Funeral and memorial service details have not yet been released.
