It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Lew Thompson, former owner of Forest Dunes and a man whose vision, passion, and commitment left an indelible mark not only on the world of golf but also on the communities and lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
Lew’s passing leaves a deep void, yet his influence, achievements, and spirit will continue to live on in Forest Dunes, in Huntsville, and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Lew was more than just an owner of Forest Dunes; he was its greatest champion and steward. He believed in the power of golf to bring people together, to create connections, and to cultivate beauty and community in a natural setting.
Under his leadership, Forest Dunes rose to prominence as one of the premier golf destinations in the United States, admired not only for its scenic landscapes but also for its spirit of innovation and inclusion.
The groundbreaking development of The Loop, one of the most unique reversible golf courses in the world, was a direct reflection of Lew’s willingness to think differently, to embrace creativity, and to ensure that Forest Dunes was a place unlike any other.
Guests, members, and employees alike remember Lew as a warm, approachable leader. Whether he was personally greeting visitors, walking the course, or sharing stories with friends and colleagues, he radiated hospitality.
Lew’s vision was not limited to fairways and greens; he understood that golf was about people—the joy of gathering, the spirit of competition, and the memories made along the way. Today, the sense of community so deeply ingrained at Forest Dunes is a living testament to Lew’s leadership and foresight.
But beyond his accomplishments in the golf world, Lew was above all else a devoted family man. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren, finding his greatest happiness in the time he shared with them.
To his family, he was not just a visionary or a leader, but a source of love, guidance, and laughter. His role as a husband, father, and grandfather defined his heart, and his joy was evident to all who saw him in the company of his loved ones.
Lew was also deeply connected to the City of Huntsville, where his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to service were equally well known. Huntsville Mayor Travis Dotson honored Lew’s life with the following words:
“It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that the City of Huntsville acknowledges the passing of Mr. Lew Thompson – a distinguished leader, devoted servant to our community, and a savvy icon of business. Mr. Thompson’s vision, dedication and entrepreneurial spirit made a lasting impact not only in the world of business but in the lives of countless individuals throughout Huntsville and beyond. As a community advocate and leader, he led with integrity, conviction, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to service. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. We extend our sincere condolences to the Thompson family, friends, colleagues and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to our city and quite frankly our way of life will not be forgotten, and his memory will remain a guiding light for our community. May God bless and keep the family and may Lew rest in peace.”
These words echo the sentiments of so many who saw in Lew a man of great vision, generosity, and heart. As we mourn Lew’s passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived.
His contributions to golf, to business, to his community, and most importantly to his family are a legacy that will endure for generations. Lew Thompson will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever inspire those who knew him to dream boldly, live generously, and lead with integrity.
