Antonio Toney Obituary, Death; – The Richland County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the individual involved in the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday.
Coroner Naida Rutherford has stated that the victim is 42-year-old Antonio Toney.
“We will continue to collaborate with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to thoroughly investigate the incident,” remarked Coroner Rutherford.
The shooting took place on Ovanta Road in Columbia, involving Richland County deputies and Toney.
Deputies arrived in response to a shots-fired report shortly before 10 a.m.
Authorities indicate that the man did not comply and began to threaten the deputies.
In an effort to ensure their safety, deputies retreated from the front of the residence to seek cover while still attempting to communicate with him.
Shortly thereafter, the man aimed a firearm at them through a window.
One deputy discharged his weapon, striking Toney.
Deputies promptly administered medical assistance, and EMS transported him to the hospital, where he subsequently passed away.
Sheriff Leon Lott has identified the deputies involved as Corporal Shawn Sullivan, Deputy Mason Boney, and Deputy Christopher Miller.
Fortunately, none of the deputies sustained injuries.
