Currently, the fire captain has entered a plea of not guilty to charges that include first-degree murder and child abuse, as reported by KCRA 3. McFarlin is also facing a felony charge of child abuse related to the second child victim.
Prosecutors assert that the murders were “deliberate and premeditated,” according to the criminal complaint. They allege that McFarlin targeted his girlfriend to prevent her from testifying against him in a criminal case. The specific crime she witnessed has not been disclosed.
McFarlin has additionally been charged with the attempted murder of another child and for injuring his girlfriend prior to her death. He serves as a fire captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire.
The criminal complaint alleges that McFarlin “inflicted corporal injury” on his girlfriend in the bedroom “before she exited the room and used her cellphone, and before he acquired the firearm and proceeded to the dining room to kill her.”
The murder charges he faces include special circumstances for multiple murders, which could lead to the imposition of the death penalty or a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
