Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Crash in Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A tragic accident early Wednesday morning claimed the life of a pedestrian in the Eagles Walk area of Gaston County, authorities said.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. on August 27 along Patrick Road near NC-274 (Union Road). A man walking in the roadway was struck by a black van. Emergency personnel arrived quickly but were unable to save him. Officials have not released the victim’s name, pending notification of next of kin.

Troopers reported that the driver of the van remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement. Investigators determined the crash was a tragic accident, with no evidence of reckless driving, impairment, or negligence by the driver. Poor visibility during the early morning hours may have contributed to the collision.

Patrick Road was temporarily closed while authorities collected evidence and documented the scene, reopening shortly after 8 a.m. Residents in the area expressed concerns about pedestrian safety, citing limited lighting along the roadway.

The Highway Patrol reminded both pedestrians and drivers to exercise caution: pedestrians should wear reflective clothing or carry a light when near roadways in low-light conditions, while drivers should stay alert and reduce speed in poorly lit areas.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The victim’s identity will be released once family members have been notified.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on roadways, especially during pre-dawn hours, and the importance of vigilance for both drivers and those on foot.
