Authorities in Mobile County, Alabama, are investigating the tragic overdose death of Kailin Laporte, which has been linked to fentanyl supplied by two individuals now in custody. The incident underscores the devastating toll of the ongoing opioid crisis and the determination of law enforcement to hold drug dealers accountable for lives lost.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), on the evening of August 25, 2025, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Chickasaw Police Department contacted MCSO to request assistance in investigating a possible overdose death at a residence located at 464 8th Avenue in Chickasaw. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim, identified as Kailin Laporte, deceased at the scene. Initial findings pointed to fentanyl as the cause of death.

Investigators quickly launched an inquiry to determine how the drugs reached the victim. Through interviews and evidence collection, authorities identified Payton Beason (DOB: 8/11/2000) and Tyler Thompson (DOB: 12/29/1993) as the individuals who supplied the fentanyl to Laporte. Detectives located both suspects at a hotel in nearby Saraland, where they were taken into custody.

During questioning, Beason reportedly admitted that she had sold fentanyl directly to Laporte and that Thompson had acted as her driver, taking her to the Chickasaw residence to complete the transaction. A search of their hotel room uncovered drug paraphernalia, white powder suspected to be narcotics, glass pipes, and cash, further connecting the suspects to illegal drug activity.

Both individuals now face multiple charges. Beason has been charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Manslaughter, Possession/Receiving Controlled Substance (warrant), and an additional Possession of a Controlled Substance charge from the Saraland Police Department. Thompson was arrested on charges of Use/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both remain in custody as the investigation continues and formal court proceedings move forward.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch released a strong statement in response to the tragedy, reaffirming his office’s commitment to aggressively pursuing individuals who distribute fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for an alarming rise in overdose deaths across Alabama and the nation.

“I promised to go after these drug dealers who are selling and trafficking fentanyl,” Sheriff Burch said. “We will continue to go after these people and work with the District Attorney’s Office in making sure they are prosecuted and held accountable for any and all deaths that occur due to their negligence.”
