Cristian Gabriel Montes Obituary, Death; – A family gathering held to celebrate a baptism turned tragic in Balch Springs when a man was shot and killed during a dispute with a relative, according to police reports.

Cristian Gabriel Montes, aged 35, was discovered with visible gunshot wounds at a residence located in the 3900 block of Peachtree Road shortly after 12:26 a.m. on July 27, 2025, as per the Balch Springs Police Department.

Law enforcement officials apprehended Leonardo Asis Campos Torres, 19, at the scene after witnesses identified him as the shooter. Campos and Montes are reportedly related and were present at a large gathering to honor the baptism of Montes’ son.

Witnesses informed the police that the altercation commenced when Montes confronted Campos regarding his earlier discharge of a handgun near Montes’ parked vehicle. The dispute intensified into a physical confrontation, during which Campos allegedly brandished a firearm and shot Montes.

After being informed of his Miranda rights, Campos confessed to shooting Montes, asserting that he acted in self-defense following a physical attack. He claimed to have retrieved a 9mm handgun during the altercation and fired at Montes.

Medical personnel at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas later verified that Montes suffered at least two gunshot wounds, one to his upper chest and another to his back. Authorities indicated that this implies he was shot multiple times and potentially after turning away or collapsing. Investigators also noted several spent shell casings on the ground near a Chevrolet Tahoe.
