FORT MILL, S.C. — Authorities say an off-duty Mecklenburg County detention officer was killed Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on the west side of Fort Mill.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the crash happened just after 11:20 a.m. on S.C. Highway 460 near the intersection with S.C. 160. Investigators said a Chrysler sedan traveling east veered off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with a Honda Odyssey traveling west.
The Chrysler’s driver, Officer Aaron Tindall, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital with injuries, though their condition has not yet been released.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) confirmed Tindall’s death and expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss.
“We offer our prayers and sympathy to his family and ask the community to keep them in their hearts during this time of grief. His passing is a great loss for our agency and our community,” Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement. “We would also like to thank the South Carolina Highway Patrol for responding and standing with us through this difficult time.”
Tindall had served with MCSO since April 2 of this year. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated officer whose service and character left a lasting impression despite his short time with the agency.
The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
