Seat Pleasant Crash Claims Life of 35-Year-Old Mother, Shaunte Denise Canty

Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal two-vehicle collision in Seat Pleasant on Tuesday afternoon as 35-year-old Shaunte Denise Canty, a Washington, D.C. resident and devoted young mother.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of Seat Pleasant Drive and Joplin Street. According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers with the Seat Pleasant Police Department had spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen days earlier. While police began monitoring the car, they did not activate their lights and no pursuit was initiated.

Investigators say the stolen vehicle sped northbound on Sheriff Road toward Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, where the driver allegedly ran a red light and struck Canty’s car on the side. The impact was catastrophic, killing Canty at the scene.

A child passenger in Canty’s vehicle was rushed to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed that four juveniles occupied the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. Three were hospitalized, while one was taken into custody. Possible charges are still under review.

Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact Prince George’s County Police at 301-731-4422. Officials stressed the dangers of reckless driving in stolen vehicles and the devastating toll it can take on innocent lives.

As the investigation continues, the community is mourning the tragic loss of Shaunte Denise Canty, remembered as a loving mother whose life was cut short in an avoidable tragedy.
