Corey Burnham Obituary, Death;- A 41-year-old man was tragically struck and killed while walking along Highway 79 in Winchester, as reported by authorities on Friday.
Corey Burnham, a resident of Hemet, sustained fatal injuries shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday on the northbound side of Highway 79, just south of Stetson Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Jonathan Torres informed City News Service that a 21-year-old man driving a Honda Accord was unable to swerve or stop upon encountering Burnham, resulting in a collision on the two-lane roadway.
“At this moment, it remains unclear whether the pedestrian was in the lanes, attempting to cross, on the shoulder, or precisely where the impact took place,” Torres stated. The driver, whose name has not been released, promptly stopped and dialed 911.
Paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department arrived within minutes and declared the victim deceased at the scene. The driver, who did not sustain any injuries, was interviewed by officers but was not taken into custody.
“There is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved,” Torres remarked. “Speed also does not seem to be a contributing factor.” An autopsy for Burnham was pending as of Friday.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out to the CHP’s San Gorgonio office at 951-846-5300.
