Justin Chapman Obituary, Death; Man who shot deputies in NKY identified

Justin Chapman Obituary, Death; – The individual accused of shooting two deputies from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office before turning the weapon on himself has been named.

Justin Chapman, aged 39, has been identified as the person who shot the deputies late Thursday in Walton, as reported by the Boone County Coroner’s Office.

The deputies were executing a felony warrant for overdue child support against Chapman at an apartment located off Towne Creek Drive when they encountered “heavy gunfire” shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday, stated Major Phillip Ridgell from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a worst nightmare type of situation,” he remarked.
Both deputies sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
One deputy was shot in the chest and was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to Major Ridgell.
The other deputy was struck in the leg and was transported to the same hospital by ambulance.

Both deputies are reported to be in stable condition with favorable prognoses, as per the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement personnel from across the Tri-State area gathered at the hospital overnight to show solidarity and support for their injured colleagues and their families. Meanwhile, at the apartment complex, Chapman barricaded himself inside an apartment following the shooting of the deputies, prompting the summoning of a SWAT team, as stated by Major Ridgell.

Residents in the vicinity were promptly evacuated.

Numerous SWAT officers and law enforcement agencies converged on the complex and collaborated to attempt to persuade him to exit the apartment.

“The suspect did not cooperate with negotiators despite numerous attempts to establish communication. After confirming that all neighboring units were evacuated, the SWAT Team deployed gas canisters into the interior of the residence,” Major Ridgell stated in a news release early Friday.

“When it was determined that the suspect was not responding to the gas deployment within a reasonable timeframe, a drone was authorized to enter the residence.

“The drone navigated through the home and discovered the suspect lying unresponsive in a second-floor bedroom. The SWAT Team safely entered the residence and confirmed that there were no other occupants or victims.

After securing the home, a SWAT Team medic assessed the suspect and determined that he was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.” All residents are back in their residences on Friday morning.

No one else was hurt, Major Ridgell confirmed. The deputies have not been identified yet as authorities continue to investigate. Part of their probe includes reviewing videos that the suspect may have posted on social media, Major Ridgell said.
