Matthew Slavetskas Obituary, Death; – The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has determined that a man found deceased in the Town of Conklin was the victim of a murder-suicide.
During a press conference on August 29, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar stated that a weeklong investigation revealed that 41-year-old Matthew Slavetskas, discovered dead in his Conklin residence, had been killed by his uncle, 65-year-old Michael Shuta, who subsequently took his own life.
Shuta was located deceased at a family-owned property in Montrose, Pennsylvania, on the morning of August 22. Following the ruling of suicide by the Pennsylvania State Police, Shuta’s family reached out to the sheriff’s office, expressing their concern as they had been unable to contact Slavetskas.
The family informed law enforcement that Slavetskas was embroiled in a dispute with his uncle regarding Slavetskas’ property located at 4467 Brady Hill Road, where Shuta resided in a trailer situated in the backyard.
At 3:30 p.m. on August 22, the sheriff’s office conducted a welfare check at the Brady Hill Road residence. Upon forcibly entering the premises, deputies discovered Slavetskas’ body, which bore multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso.
In a Facebook announcement made on August 22, the sheriff’s office initially reported an investigation into a “possible homicide” at a residence in the vicinity of Brady Hill Road and Gregory Road in the Town of Binghamton.
In a subsequent post, the sheriff’s office reassured residents that the incident was contained and that there was “no immediate threat to the public or the surrounding neighborhood.”
On the evening prior to the discovery of his body, Shuta was captured on one of the Slavetskas’ security cameras around 10 p.m., dressed entirely in black, and was seen knocking down a separate security camera located at the rear of the house.
The investigation by the sheriff’s office concluded that between 10:30 and 11 p.m., Slavetskas returned to the Brady Hill residence and engaged in a physical altercation with his uncle in the backyard, during which he was shot multiple times.
After sustaining the gunshot wounds, Slavetskas managed to enter his home and secured himself inside near the front of the house.
