BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Belleville police are investigating the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Dreshaun Mathis, who was killed Saturday night in the city. Officers were dispatched to Memorial Hospital around 7:20 p.m. after reports that a man had arrived with a gunshot wound.
Mathis was initially stabilized at the hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in St. Louis, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have confirmed that the shooting took place in the 500 block of North 38th Street, though the circumstances leading to the attack remain under investigation.
The Belleville Police Department’s Detective Bureau and Crime Scene Unit are actively working to determine what happened and to identify those responsible. No suspect information has been released at this time.
This marks the fourth fatal shooting in Belleville in 2025, raising concerns over ongoing gun violence in the community. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Belleville Police Department directly or submit tips anonymously through regional Crime Stoppers services.
The community mourns the loss of Mathis, a young life cut far too short, as authorities continue their investigation.
